When Mary Subramanian, RN isn’t on duty as a hospice nurse she’s busy as radio personality, Belinda Subraman, engineering and producing two shows for BZOO located at www.bzoo.org. The station was formed in late July, 2005 by RG George out of Kentucky. Through a poetry board she belonged to he put out a call for performance mp3s. Belinda sent out some of her spoken word with music performances. After another call for show producers it wasn’t long before she got involved producing shows. The first shows were 15 minute spots in which she interviewed several El Paso poets and musicians including Gene Keller, Donna Snyder, Ray Ramos and Nancy Green. This grew into a 45 minute show called The Gypsy Art Show in which Belinda interviews renowned musicians, writers, and artists from all over the U.S. Recently she interviewed Irish singer, Susan McKeown, who has been reviewed in Time Magazine and Rolling Stone. She has appeared on The Prairie Home Companion and CBS This Morning and has recorded with Natalie Merchant. Also of special interest she interviewed Jerry Winnstrom, an artist who destroyed his work after receiving significant acclaim. After ten years of being homeless and searching for an answer he began to make art again and is now making the best art of his life. He tells his story in the book “The Inspired Heart” from Sentient Publications and a documentary of his life, “ In The Hands Of Alchemy” is on video available from Parabola.
Belinda also hosts a 60 minute music show called Music of the Universe in which she promotes and plays musician /singer /songwriters from all over the world. El Paso residents are invited and encouraged to contact her for airplay of their music or to be interviewed for one of her shows.
